Clarifying a complex financial workflow

In April 2025, I completed a product design assignment as part of the recruitment process for a B2B fintech company. The brief focused on a newly launched waterfall analysis tool used by venture-capital investors and fund managers to model how proceeds may be distributed across funds and share classes under different exit scenarios.

My task was to explore how this complex workflow could be structured and presented more clearly.

Framing the design challenge

Waterfall analysis may involve multiple funds, share classes, liquidation preferences, conversion ratios, participation caps and exit scenarios. Users need to work through dense input data, tables and charts before they can understand and compare potential distributions.

The design challenge was to structure this complexity without removing the financial detail users needed for decision-making.

Translating requirements into three core user tasks

After reviewing the available product requirements, I structured the experience around three core workflows. These formed the product’s information architecture and the basis of the prototype.

Configure

Set up funds and exit scenarios

Review

Understand allocation patterns

Compare

Examine detailed distributions

Designing a clear path from configuration to analysis

Configure funds and exit scenarios

Fund data and scenario settings were separated into a structured input flow, making it easier for users to enter, review and update the variables used in each calculation.

Review proceeds at a glance

Summary visualisations provide an overview of how proceeds are allocated across different exit scenarios before users move into more detailed analysis.

Compare distributions in detail

Charts and tables work together to help users compare proceeds across share classes, funds and investment vehicles while retaining access to the underlying values.

Concept outcome

The final concept translated fragmented requirements into a more structured workflow for configuring analyses, reviewing allocation patterns and comparing detailed results.

As this was a design concept rather than a fully implemented product, the next step would be to validate the terminology, calculation flow and visualisations with fund managers and other intended users.

What I learnt from the project

Using AI to accelerate domain learning

Since venture-capital waterfall modelling was a new domain for me, I used language models to clarify terminology, investment rules, explore potential edge cases and generate realistic synthetic data for the prototype. These tools accelerated background research, while the interface structure and design decisions remained grounded in the available product requirements and defined use cases.
