Focus group, card sorting, personas
To dive into the users’ scenarios, we combined the methods of focus group and card sorting before personas were created. In the interview, 4 people with the experience of house sharing longer than 2 years were invited to discuss how they had faced the issue of common chores.

Which type of house/flat do you live?
What are the chores to be done in your house/flat?
How chores are usually arranged in your experience?
What the difficulty have you faced when you have to arrange chores?
Which types of housemates have you met in the past? What’s the difference in the arrangement of chores when you share a house/flat with different housemates?
What kind of functions of an App would you expect to solve the pain points?

While the process of how flatmates had dealt with chores were discovered, we used the method of sorting cards to categorise problems on different stages. With the obtained information, we created the personas, user journeys and the logics of application.

We also analysed 3 products, Room Mate, Our Home, and Toby, to clarify the position of our product.
The apps are designed with different features in terms of the number of home members, the complexity of to-be-done tasks, and the way to motivating users to complete tasks.
Our product strategy is to first stabilise basic functions, provide smooth experience for users, and then add playful and interesting reward system as a motivation bonus.

Takeaway from the project
Experience in end-to-end product design
Cooperating with 2 partners, we shared the work of UX research, set up product strategy, conducted UX and UI design and managed the product with agile methodology. By working closely with senior programmer/ project manager, I learnt how to review a product and tasks from the perspectives of development and project management, and how to identify a proper approach that may efficiently benefit the product at that moment. Additionally, this project also enabled me to work on the details of interface design in IOS and Android systems.
